Computrace to the Rescue - Success Stories

    Introduction

Computrace safeguards your computing and business assets by tracking, monitoring and recovering lost or stolen PCs. Computrace keeps an eye on your PCs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and helps you increase productivity by giving you up-to-date information on their status.

Computrace gets your missing computers back.

If a Computrace-equipped PC falls into the hands of an unauthorized user, the Computrace Tracking Agent silently contacts our Monitoring Center when the PC is attached to a phone line or has access to the Internet. The Computrace Recovery Team then reports the PC's location to law enforcement to retrieve the missing asset and return it to its rightful owner. The Computrace solution gives Absolute customers peace of mind that their equipment - and data - is safe.

Computrace: Hidden & stealthy: its invisibility helps identify thieves
Tamper-resistant: virtually impossible to alter or delete
Simple: quick to install, easy to use
Internet-based: gives you unlimited access to asset information
Remote PC tracking: the status of your mobile PCs no longer a mystery

    Product Description

The stealthy Tracking Agent software resides on a Windows-based PC
The Monitoring Center acts as a sentinel, keeping track of Computrace-equipped PCs

  • The Recovery Team responds to a reported loss by locating your PC and working with law enforcement to retrieve it
  • The web-based reports give you unlimited access to your PC asset data, 24 hours a day

    The Computrace Tracking Agent:

The heart of the Computrace technology is the Tracking Agent. This thin client application is quickly loaded on individual PCs from a CD or via your LAN (local area network). It can also be obtained from the Computrace website or provided in an e-mail. Once installed on the hard drive, the agent silently and automatically contacts the Computrace Monitoring Center on a regular basis, transmitting PC location and other auto-discovered data points. On-going communication between the Agent and the Monitoring center requires no action by the user and is carried out when the computer is attached to a phone line or has access to the Internet. No passwords or network connections are needed, so the user never has to manage the agent: in fact, they don't even need to know that it's there, and it doesn't affect any other programs on the computer.

    The Computrace Monitoring Center:

Once the Agent has transmitted computer information such as IP address, phone number, electronic serial number, user name, hard drive size and processor type, the Monitoring Center sends the next call time and date to the Agent. If a PC is reported lost or stolen, the Monitoring Center goes on Alert mode and immediately instructs the Agent to increase its call frequency. When the missing PC is connected to a phone line or has access to the Internet, the Monitoring Center automatically logs its new location and tracks the PC through calls every fifteen minutes.

    Full-service security solution:

As soon as a stolen or missing computer makes contact, our Recovery Team gets in touch with local law enforcement and prepares all the necessary documentation to start the recovery process, letting police officials focus on the arrest and get the PC back. Want to find out about real PC rescues? Continuous asset tracking: Aside from protecting and recovering PCs, Computrace also allows you to monitor your computers around the clock. The new Computrace PC Asset Tracking service compiles valuable information on your asset pool to let you manage it more proactively and efficiently. Our secure, web-based reporting tools let you track the status of your PCs and even help you prevent loss. You'll know where your computers are and what their status is, all the time.

    Frequently Asked Questions
    Q. Can Computrace be removed?
    A. Computrace cannot be erased off the hard drive by deleting files because the Tracking Agent is not visible in file directories. Computrace can survive a hard drive re-format, F-disk command and hard drive re-partitioning. It can only be removed by an authorized user with the correct password and installation software.

    Q. Can Computrace work with encryption software?
    A. Yes. Computrace works with file and directory level encryption.

    Q. Can Computrace co-exist with anti-virus software?
    A. We have successfully tested Computrace with all major anti-virus software products, including the latest versions of McAfee Anti-Virus and Norton Anti-Virus, Fprot, Dr. Solomon, Pc Cillin, IBM Thunderbyte and Safetynet Virusnet. However, we recommend you disable any anti-virus software before installing Computrace and then restart it immediately after the installation is complete.

Q.How long does it take to install Computrace?
    A. It only takes a few minutes to run through the wizard-based installation tool and install Computrace.

    Q. What are the minimum system requirements to run Computrace?
A.Hardware: - 486 or faster processor - Hayes-compatible modem or connection to the Internet - Hard drive with a total capacity of at least 500 MB Operating System: - MS-DOS or PC-DOS, version 5.0 or higher; or - Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows NT or Windows Me

Q.How can I install Computrace across my population of PCs?
    A. For installation on multiple PCs, Absolute supplies an Administration Toolkit that enables the administrator to successfully propagate Computrace from a single server.

Q.. Can Computrace dial through various telephone systems?
    A. Computrace works from any phone line in the United States and Canada, even those requiring a special prefix number, such as 8 or 9. If Computrace is set to dial with a special prefix, it will first dial using that prefix but will try all common prefixes (and no prefix) until it makes a successful connection.

    Q. Can the user hear the modem when Computrace makes a call?
    A. No. The modem speaker is automatically turned off when Computrace calls the Monitoring Center so the user, authorized or not, never has to know that the call has taken place.

Q.What happens if the modem on a Computrace-equipped computer is replaced?
    A. Computrace directly communicates with modems on a machine code basis. As long as the new modem installed is Hayes compatible and functioning correctly, Computrace will report its location.

    Q. Can Computrace be operational on a dual-boot system?
    A. Computrace works on a dual boot system when the PC is booted to a qualified Windows operating system.

    Q. Can Computrace identify a phone number that is unlisted or using Caller ID blocking?
    A. Yes. Using the ANI (automatic number identification) system, we can identify any incoming phone number, even those that are unlisted or that employ Caller ID blocking.

    Q. Can Computrace work through firewalls to reach the Internet?
    A. Yes. Computrace uses any active IP connection to reach the Internet through firewalls and proxies.
